I Had a Tooth Extraction Five Days Ago, But I am Still Bleeding!

After extraction, you should follow the aftercare instructions the oral surgeon or dentist provides you. It is normal to have the site bleed and clot, generally in the minutes or hours following the extraction. However, if bleeding continues without the site clotting or it lasts more than 12 hours, then it could be considered abnormal.

The first 48 hours are very important for the healing process. Having the right care will prevent prolonged bleeding, painful complications, or infection. A patient could suffer from a dry socket if the area does not clot or if the clotting is dislodged.

Bleeding five days following the tooth extract can happen; however, it may not always indicate that there is a problem. If you have little amounts of blood present in your saliva, you should not worry, provided that the area has clotted and is continuing to heal. What could be happening is that your saliva is picking up blood within the clot thus giving it that pinkish appearance.

Nonetheless, if the bleeding is heavier or regular, it could indicate a problem. You should reach out to a dentist or oral surgeon whenever you realize that you have regular bleeding or heavy bleeding five days after an extraction. You should treat it as a dental emergency and get help immediately.

Talk to our oral surgeon about tooth extractions and what to expect, including the post-care instructions. Our oral surgeon will provide you will all the details you need regarding extractions. Today's extractions are performed under local anesthesia and IV sedation and therefore they do not hurt except for the slight soreness and discomfort after the extraction. The extraction itself isn't painful, thanks to sedation dentistry.

Are Dental Implants Right For You?

Crowns and conventional bridges or dentures may not be your only options when replacing missing teeth. For some people, dental implants offer a smile that looks and feels very natural. Implants offer stability because they fuse to your bone, a process called osseointegration. Integration of the implants into your jaw also helps your replacement teeth feel more natural, and some people find the secure fit more comfortable than conventional substitutes. Candidates for dental implants must have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant.

We are ready to talk with you about your options to replace one or more missing teeth whenever you are ready. It can be a big decision, and we will be with you each step of the way. Call our office to set up a consultation to learn more about restoring your smile.

Simple Tips to Avoid Oral Surgery Complications
check list tasks check list eNewsletter
Most oral surgeries are fairly routine, but you'll need to take steps to care for your mouth afterwards in order to avoid complications. Keep these tips in mind when you are recovering from your oral surgery:

Follow directions. Your oral surgeon will give you important recovery instructions to follow once you return home.
Eat right. Avoid sharp and hard foods that can disturb the wound. Eating foods that are high in vitamins C and A can also help to speed up the recovery process.
Keep your mouth clean. Bacteria are fairly constant in the mouth, so it is important to keep the surgical site clean. Rinsing out your mouth with warm salt water is a great idea.

Do you have questions about how to keep your mouth healthy? Contact your oral surgeon.
