Have You Been Scheduled For Dental Implant Placement? Here Is The Healing Timeline!
oral surgery sedation 522318442
After you have successfully been operated on by an oral surgeon and your dental implant surgery is now done, this is the healing timeline you can expect:

First 24 Hours After Surgery: Prior to surgery, strong sedation, which lasts on average for the first 24 hours, is administered. This will numb the operation site, making it painless. Use painkillers when the sedation wears off if you are left with pain and discomfort. The use of ice also helps in numbing the painful area too. Clean your teeth well, but avoid direct contact with the implants when brushing. Consume soft foods and drinks.

The Second to Third Day After Surgery: By this time, the bleeding and swelling should be reduced. You should, however, maintain eating soft foods to avoid dislodging the clot on your wound, which aids in the healing process. Continue practicing good dental hygiene, but be cautious when you reach where the implants are, and don't brush directly on them.

The Third Day to a Week After Surgery: At this point, you can switch to much denser foods, but they should not be very hard or crunchy. Try foods such as rice, pasta, or foods that are not hard enough to hurt your wound. Try as much as possible to avoid the implants during brushing.

One to Two Weeks After Surgery: After one week, your mouth is now healed enough for you to chew hard foods and brush normally. Even so, consider chewing extremely hard food on the opposite teeth. Visit us for a further check-up at this stage.

Frequently Asked Questions about Dry Socket
GettyImages 511735262
Do you need to have a tooth extracted? If so, you need to take steps to avoid a condition known as dry socket during your recovery. By learning more about this condition, you can take the steps to prevent it.

How Do Dry Sockets Form?
Dry sockets develop when the blood clot that forms in the socket becomes dislodged. This clot is crucial in protecting the bony tooth socket and in initiating the healing process.

What Are the Signs of a Dry Socket?
Dry sockets tend to be quite painful and uncomfortable. You should notice the tissue surrounding the extraction site becoming reddened and inflamed, and you may notice a foul taste in your mouth. Neck and jaw pain could be present, as may enlarged lymph nodes.

What Can You Do to Prevent a Dry Socket?
The most important prevention effort is to avoid aggravating the blood clot at the extraction site. This means you should not brush or rinse your mouth vigorously, drink from a straw, or smoke cigarettes. You should also minimize exercise and physical stress.

How Long Will a Dry Socket Last?
Once a dry socket develops, it will take 7-10 days for new tissue to form to cover up the exposed bone in the socket. However, this doesn't mean that your pain and discomfort will last for this long.

If you recently had a tooth extracted and think you might be suffering from dry socket, give our office a call. While there likely isn't anything that can be done to speed up the healing process, we can discuss options to help ease your discomfort.

The Benefits of Botox

Did you know that nearly 3 million Botox treatments are administered in this country every year? It's been in use for over 20 years and was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use seven years ago.

According to Webmd.com, Botox "stops wrinkles where they start." It blocks nerves to prevent wrinkle formation and softens existing wrinkles. It can improve skin appearance and boost self-confidence.

Give us a call if you'd like to discuss getting a Botox treatment before the holidays.
