I Have Received a Tooth Extraction, When Can Implants Be Placed?

You are about to get a single tooth or multiple teeth extracted. You have probably given thought to the gap that will be left there and you have opted for an immediate permanent replacement. Dental implants are a long-term answer to this problem.

If dental implants are your choice of treatment, how soon you have them will depend on several factors. This is because of the complex nature of the process of getting implants.

Having implants involves dental surgery. Your gums and the bone under them will have to be operated on. The implant is fixed in the bone after an incision is made by an oral surgeon. The implant will take time to merge with the bone. After the healing time, an abutment and a crown will be mounted onto it. This shows that even after the implant post is inserted, it will take time for the entire dental implant procedure to be completed.

If you are in good oral health condition, you can have your implants placed immediately after extraction. In some cases, the gum tissue may take 10 days to be ready for implants after extraction. Since not everyone can receive same-day implants, the other option would be to wait for roughly four to six months, while your mouth heals and the implant post fuses with your jawbone.

Blepharoplasty

Cosmetic issues around the eyes can easily be fixed with a process called blepharoplasty. Using this process, we can get rid of sagging eyelids, folds around the eyes and bags beneath the eyes. We do this by removing excess skin and fat around the eyelids.

This surgery is commonly performed in conjunction with similar cosmetic procedures such as an eyebrow lift, face lift or forehead lift.

Pre-Operative Preparation

Before the surgery we will have an in-depth discussion with you about your goals and any concerns about the procedure. Then we will take a few pictures of your face so we have a basis for comparison. We will also digitally manipulate the pictures to give you an idea of how you will look once the procedure is finished.

We will ask you for a list of any medications you take and any allergies you have. This along with a checklist of your medical history will ensure a safe surgery.

An antibiotic will be prescribed to you before the surgery to ensure the risk of infection is reduced.

The Procedure

This procedure can be done using either general sedation or IV sedation. We want you to be comfortable and will offer any accommodation to make that possible.

Blepharoplasty is done by first tracing the natural creases and lines of the face and eyelids. We then make incisions within the creases of the eyelid, remove any fat or excess skin from the area and suture the incision closed. Because this procedure is performed so close to the eye, we often apply a special ointment and dressing to help keep the site from drying out.

Post-Operative Information

Drying of the eyes and the area around the eyes is sometimes a problem after blepharoplasty. We will discuss this with you before you leave our office, and may give you a prescription for medication to help alleviate any dryness that may occur. Sensitivity to wind, cold and light have also been known to occur after this procedure.

Dental Sedation

Many patients have had traumatic experiences in dentistry or have other anxieties about their treatment. At Mountain State Oral and Facial Surgery, strives to meet your individual comfort needs. For our patients with anxiety, sedation dentistry may be the answer. We offer both nitrous oxide and oral (conscious) sedation as options for our patients.

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that will help you relax. It is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose.

Nitrous oxide, sometimes called "laughing gas," is one option we may offer to help make you more comfortable during certain procedures. It is not intended to put you to sleep. You will be able to hear and respond to any requests or directions we may have. will ask you to breathe normally through your nose, and within a few short minutes you should start to feel the effects of the nitrous oxide. You may feel light-headed or a tingling in your arms and legs. Some people say their arms and legs feel heavy. Ultimately, you should feel calm and comfortable. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off soon after the mask is removed. Talk to us about whether nitrous oxide would be a good option for you at your next appointment.

Oral (Conscious) Sedation
Oral sedation dentistry allows to create a safe and comfortable dental experience for patients who avoid the dentist out of fear.

With sedation, your dentist can work more effectively by helping you become as comfortable as possible using well established and proven methods. There are a variety of sedation medications that are taken orally or "sublingually" (under the tongue). All sedation medicines are administered at our offices, under the care of an assistant.

This type of dental care does require that you have a driver to bring you home from your appointment, as it takes several hours for the medication to completely wear off. For more information about oral sedation at Mountain State Oral and Facial Surgery, please contact our office today!
