Why is Preventive Dentistry for Kids with Special Needs So Important?
Tooth brush with paste floss and blue mouth wash
Just like other kids, children with special needs require proper attention when it comes to oral care. Just because a child may have other medical problems that cannot be prevented doesn't mean that they have to suffer dental problems. Starting preventive dentistry for your child with special needs is crucial and it should begin early on. When dental care begins early and is followed consistently, your child will be able to enjoy a healthy smile.

Unlike many health conditions that children with special needs may be challenged with, dental problems are mostly preventable. Effective brushing, proper flossing, adequate fluoride, limited snacking, and dental sealants are among the prudent things to consider. Again, regular dental visits are paramount.

As a parent, you might be concerned about your child's tolerance to dental appointments. Whatever concerns you might have, it is crucial that you take preventive dentistry very seriously for your child. Our pediatric dental office understands that every child is different, as such, we offer unique approaches to treating every child based on their specific needs.

Children with special needs often have challenges with their oral hygiene routine. Sometimes, it may take longer for them to learn how to brush and floss. As a parent, you should make sure that you assist your child in learning good oral hygiene practices. Keep in touch with our pediatric dentist to ensure that any oral issues are spotted early on. The dentist will also continue to monitor the development of your child's teeth and how they are keeping up with their oral hygiene. Contact us today concerning your child's oral health.

What is the Purpose of Dental Sealants in Kids?
Dental sealants are a protective measure for teeth from disease-causing bacteria. Given your teeth have grooves that help in grinding food when chewing, bacteria can get trapped in them making your teeth susceptible to cavities after some time. Thus, sealants coat these areas, acting as an effective barrier to ensure bacteria cannot reach them. Although it is possible to achieve good oral health by observing diligent oral health practices, it is important to note that not every time you will be able to reach and protect the nooks and crannies of your teeth from bacteria, plaque, and food particles; hence the need for sealants which act as a shield to these vulnerable areas of your teeth. Contact us to have your child get dental sealants.

My Dentist Uses Oral Conscious Sedation; Is It Safe for My Child?

Most kids are administered with laughing gas, which is considered safe. Sometimes though, a dentist may administer oral conscious sedation. This type of sedation can be utilized together with other sedatives and offers mild to moderate sedative effects depending on the type of dosage and medication. It makes kids conscious throughout the procedure. Even though they may fall asleep, they can still respond to commands. A child who has higher anxiety levels can receive oral sedation. Again, a child who has challenges wearing a laughing gas mask may need oral sedation. A dentist will make sure that the sedation is administered safely and at the right dosage. Contact us regarding sedation options for kids.

Our treatment philosophy centers around each child's individual needs and concerns to create a gentle and caring approach that works for that child. We firmly believe that a positive, enjoyable dental experience will help children build confidence and knowledge that will create a lifetime of great dental health.
