I'm Pregnant, How Do I Keep My Teeth Healthy?

Pregnancy comes with a lot of excitement, you imagine that day you will start cuddling your little one. Amidst all of those expectations comes an uphill task of maintaining good oral health. You want your health to be at its best during this time. Keeping your teeth healthy is a journey that you should take seriously now that we know that your oral health has connections with overall health. In fact, bacteria in your mouth are likely to find their way into the body, often attacking other organs and worsening any chronic condition you may have.

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can affect your dental health. The hormones affect connective tissues in the entire body, including the mouth. As a result, you may find that the gums are more sensitive and susceptible to infection and gum disease. Additionally, the gums have a higher chance of bleeding during brushing when pregnant. It is for this reason that you should make regular trips to a dentist. This way, the dentist is able to catch any symptoms of gingivitis - the early stage of periodontal disease - in advance and get it treated promptly.

Moreover, if your morning sickness symptoms are so pronounced, your teeth can be prone to decay. One of the symptoms of morning sickness is acid reflux, which comes about due to nausea and vomiting. Try using a mouthwash to minimize the buildup of acid on the teeth so that it does not cause severe decay. Talk to our periodontics team to discover more about pregnancy and oral health.

When is it Necessary for a Dentist to Perform a Tooth Extraction?
While tooth extraction is not often performed, there are times when it becomes necessary. If you have lost all of your teeth, it may be time to consider having one or more removed to preserve the health of your remaining teeth. Tooth extraction can also be used to save teeth that are diseased or problematic for other reasons, such as an impacted wisdom tooth or a cracked tooth that will not heal properly.

As long as you keep your remaining teeth in good shape by practicing proper oral hygiene habits and visiting your dentist at least twice per year, you do not need to worry about tooth extraction becoming necessary any time soon. At our dental clinic, our dentist will review your dental history and explain the importance of having your tooth extracted before beginning the procedure.

Does Teeth Whitening Pose Any Risks?
Teeth Whitening half white smile width of 500 pixels
Just like any other dental procedure, teeth whitening can present certain risks. Although it is non-invasive and almost painless, professional teeth whitening can have some risks. The main concern is the use of teeth bleaching agents. Certain people need to avoid teeth whitening products, for instance, patients with sensitivity to peroxide and other bleaching chemicals that are used to whiten teeth. Sensitivity of gums and teeth is a common negative effect of teeth whitening, particularly when high-strength teeth whitening agents are used. Although the sensitivity fades over time after completing the treatment, it can still be uncomfortable for some people. Talk to us about teeth whitening and the risks it poses.
